Welcome to the University of Applied Sciences Amberg-Weiden
The German academic system has two main types of higher education institutes: universities of applied sciences (Hochschulen für angewandte Wirtschaft, früher: Fachhochschulen) and research universities (Universitäten). While the universities concentrate on academic research, the universities of applied sciences have a more practical focus.
The goal of universities of applied sciences is to provide their students with a practical, theory-based education. This practical orientation draws much of its strength from our professors' extensive backgrounds in industry - each of them has worked outside of academia for at least five years. Students experience hands-on learning through small group seminars and a compulsory work placement semester.
The teaching at universities of applied sciences is strongly oriented towards current economic demands. Ever since the first universities of applied sciences were founded in the 1970s, this type of education has become increasingly popular among students - especially those in business and engineering - and the companies hire them: In fact, approximately one third of German students begin their studies at universities of applied sciences, including about 70% of all engineering students and 50% of all business students.
The UAS Amberg-Weiden is a dynamic and supportive university that enables students to complete their studies swiftly and sucessfully.
